About our Workmanship Standards Manual

The information laid out in our Workmanship Standards Manual (WSM) was developed to provide guidelines for operators, inspectors, customers and engineering personnel. They are to be used only for those characteristics not specified on the print. They are to be used in a reasonable manner to provide assistance when making judgement calls on manufacturing variations & defects.

The Engineering Manager in conjunction with the QA Manager at Norstan, Inc. is responsible for developing documentation, inspection method, communication, and ensuring the proper interpretations of these standards.

Many customers do not fully specify types of deficiencies that are objectionable. Examples: discoloration, face finish, tool marks, corner voids, slivers, cold shuts, flatness, concentricity etc. consequently these standards become a very important tool.

We have discovered that customer rejection more than half the time results from conditions not specified on the print. If questionable conditions are discovered this manual serves as a reference guide.

Due to part configurations and material choices not all of these guidelines can apply to all parts manufactured by Norstan, Inc. We communicate this with our customers in those situations as needed. At the time of quoting we point out as many of these situations as possible. We make no claim that all the parts manufactured will be free of these manufacturing variations. From time to time we may update this manual. Older versions of the manual may be in circulation and may not reflect the current standards being used. We reserve the right to change these standards making some less or more stringent as necessary. Our WSM should not be considered a contract requirement but rather a guideline for identifying and controlling manufacturing variations. Copies of this manual are made available to our customers upon their request. You may download and print as many original copies of this manual from our web site as you wish.

Our manual and it's images and contents are copyright protected and may not be copied reproduced or distributed without written permission from Norstan, Inc. Other than as stated above.
